Context Statement

So as you can see the current issue is will the health care plan work out like they want it too? Will there be many issues or will it surprise us and work out quite well? A positive thing about the health care bill is that the new rules will prevent insurers from denying coverage to people with pre existing conditions. It will also make it more difficult for insurers to cancel polices once a covered individual ends up getting sick. This is going to benefit them so much because this is where the medical bills start stacking up.

Now let me mention some cons to the new Health Care Bill. As of 2014, all American citizens are going to be required to have health insurance. If any individual refuses to do so because of there own personal reason, they will pay up to $675 a year just for not having insurance. If this isn't a big enough threat to people, insurance companies can might begin raising there prices and stop writing new insurance policies.  Now what about all the medical doctors that are going to have to start taking in so many more patients? Are they going to be able to handle this and afford it? There is a possibility doctors will just quit practicing and not accept the new incoming laws.

People's biggest complaint as this bill was signed was that well I haven't gone to the doctor in 7 years why should I have to pay for insurance. Well you know why? Because things happen, and there might be one day where you have to have emergency surgery and it's going to cost $50,000. Then what do you do, you have to pay it and end up in so much debt. If you had insurance though the price wouldn't even be half of that and the debt wouldn't really be there anymore. People need to be appreciative of the things we are given because it could save our lives one day.

In my paper I really want to focus on why this is going to be such a big deal when it goes into effect in 2014. I want to talk about what people, doctors and government officials are going to do. This is nothing like auto insurance. This is something completely different and it could change many things. Some would say your freedom is taken away because you have to buy it, but I think it will be saving the United States a lot of money.

  1. Nice draft of a context statement Emily. I like that you are starting to find a psotion to argue for--you are on the cusp of a very intersting argument about waht some are calling freedom and what others are referring to as the necessity of balancing our national budget. This argument is intersting because many don't look at the freedom we have to give up as a nation the more we are beholden to loans from other countries-- a whole avenue of ideas to pursue there. Good stuff. (Although I might add, you should do a bit more proofreading before you post next time).

  2. Emily, One area of the Health Care Bill that I am most concerned with are the rising costs of health premiums. In my state, Rhode Island, self employed people need to find some group to join (not easy) or get a direct pay policy. The only insurance company in our state is Blue Cross Blue Shield. You cannot go out of state for a policy, so there is one option. I cannot find out much information on how this new Health Care bill contains/controls costs. Have you any information on that aspect of the new law? Thanks for any info. Rachele

  3. Hi again Emily, I forgot in my previous post to you to let you know I am a student at URI. I am also self-employed, that is why your topic interests me so much. I know we need to find a fix to our health care situation, and I know everyone has been talking about the federal government helping with premiums, etc. However, not much is mentioned about the constant rate increase that Blue Cross keeps filing for and receiving. Thanks again. Rachele

  4. Hi Emily, I am Channy from URI in Rhode Island. I am taking a Public Writing class this semester. I love your topic and it is most certainly a heated debate that will not end anytime soon. I also love the fact that you are so passionate about your life, your career choice and this topic!

You have a really good handle on the main concept of this topic and there seem to be a really good concept about how the new healthcare plan will affect individuals. Maybe you can do some research on what can be done to help individuals from increased costs. What are some things that can be included in the bill or some things that people can do to help lower health costs? What about allowing people to shop interstate wide in order to drive rates down by forcing competition among the insurance companies? These are just a few things to consider. Good luck! (Channy)

  5. Rachele,
I did some research and found that as of right now the insurance premiums are going to continue to skyrocket as coverage is shrinking. This is a particularly bad thing for small businesses as the costs seem to be rising the most for them. They are saying the premiums are rising because of the underlying cost for care and such a high demand from it. A bigger benefit package results in the higher premium costs. There main worry is getting everyone health insurance and there planning on dealing with the costs later. That doesn't seem like the best idea to me, as they should be taking care of the costs as they are working on the health insurance. It's also been said that the most people that are going to benefit from it are uninsured people. They are going to get the benefit because they will have help getting health insurance. I am trying to find more info on Blue Cross's health insurance plans.

    Channy,
I am looking up more information on what you talked about. Will post later:)

  6. I do agree, this will be a huge problem for those who do not already have health insurance. Being an individual who has diabetes and will be under my mother's health insurance until I'm 26 years old. It would be extremely hard for me to live without health insurance considering all of the prescriptions and medical supplies I have to purchase. I can only imagine those who have more serious conditions and do not have health insurance. It must be extremely expensive and be very stressful for the families and individuals dealing with the expenses of health insurance and the expenses that come with it.

  7. The healthcare system in our country is something that I pay close attention too. Currently I am under my parents health care plan. However since I will no longer be a student in a few months I will need to provide my own health insurance. Now this is not a problem for most people besides maybe having to pay out of pocket for an ear, nose, and throat visit. But I diabetic and healthcare is vital for me. My supplies are extremely expensive and my doctors visit are expensive as well. I also need to see a variety of doctors to make sure I am well, such as eye doctors, nutritionists, dentist, and others as well. As you can image all the co-pay adds up!
